‘The Flip’ was a very popular 1960s hair style that involved using large curlers and sitting underneath a hooded hair dryer and using lots of hairspray! Back then they did not have the luxury of such ‘fancy’ equipment like the curling wands and hair dryers of today that can help us to create the look. ‘The Flip’ was a smart, classic style and was created by backcombing and flicking the end of the hair to make a curl, usually just above the shoulders. ‘The Flip’ was often combined with a bouffant high hair style that was teased into a round, high ball on top of the head! It is relatively easy to make the style yourself at home. Firstly section off your hair to get the best result. Use a curling wand to flip each section outwards at the ends and use a bit of hairspray to keep it in. The bouffant part of this style is created by teasing or backcombing hair from around the crown of the head and then smoothing over a layer of hair over the top. This creates the ball or barrel like shape. This may need some hairspray also. When teasing or backcombing, hold the section and comb against the hair back towards the scalp. Keep doing this until you have the required amount of volume for your style. Make sure you use a fine comb and remember that teasing can damage your hair so try to limit the amount of times you use this process. This hairstyle leant itself to the wearing of hair accessories-one of the popular ones being the headband. A wide elasticised polyester or satin headband was often worn. Other accessories included the bandana, bow and sash. This style was a very elegant and sophisticated look and was made popular by many famous faces during this time.
